The Muslim Youth HelpLine

Who we are

The Muslim Youth HelpLine (MYHL) is a 24 hours-a-day telephone counselling service for Muslim youth in Canada and the United States. Whatever your concern or struggle may be; whether big or small, we are here to help you! Calls are confidential and anonymous. You don’t even need to tell us your name if you don’t want to.

Our Vision

To educate, empower and raise awareness within the North American Muslim community to address the broad and complex challenges faced by Muslim youth in North America. These issues include, but are not limited to, substance abuse, Islamic identity, sexuality, peer/family relationships and violence.

Our Goal

To promote healthy Islamic youth development by providing immediate, supportive and professional helpline and online services to Muslim youth in North America.

Mission Statement

To promote healthy Islamic youth development by providing free professional faith-based helpline services that are immediate, interactive and have links to information and services that support the social, emotional and religious needs of Muslim youth in North America.

Our Philosophy

The MYHL represents a bridge to better communication for all youth to have their questions answered in a safe, non-judgmental and confidential manner and within the guidelines of the Sharia’.

The MYHL is staffed by volunteer Imams, Muslim counsellors and community
leaders who are well versed in Sharia’, trained in counselings techniques and have grown up in Canada.

With the consent of the caller, MYHL works collaboratively with family members, friends, the school system and other community resources to provide referrals and follow-up support where appropriate.

Why do we need a helpline for Muslim youth?

Specialized help lines and hot lines are available across Canada and the US for issues such as suicide, eating disorders, substance abuse and domestic violence. In a 2007 report by the National Youth Agency in the United Kingdom it was found that, “Young Muslims are increasingly reluctant to access mainstream support services for fear of being discriminated against and misunderstood, and conversely mainstream support services are struggling to serve hard to reach minority Muslim youth.” As can be seen by the rapid growth and expansion of the MYHL in North America, Muslim youth in Canada and the US are experiencing similar barriers in accessing mainstream support services and are finding a safe, understanding and supportive space with MYHL counsellors.
